Young individual detained for making fake bomb threats to flights at Delhi’s IGI Airport

“New Delhi: A 25-year-old man was arrested by police for allegedly sending bomb threat emails targeting a flight at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport. The individual, identified as Shubham Upadhyay from Uttam Nagar in Delhi, reportedly sent these threats to gain attention after watching similar incidents in the news, according to PTI.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (IGI) Usha Rangnani explained that between October 26-29, the airport received two suspicious emails containing potential bomb threats. “Immediate action was taken, and standard security protocols were activated, but the threats were determined to be hoaxes,” she said. Following this, authorities registered a case under section 3(1)(d) of the Suppression of Unlawful Acts against Safety of Civil Aviation (SUA SCA) Act, 1982, and section 351(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), launching an investigation that eventually traced the emails to an account linked to Upadhyay.

In a public statement, Rangnani reassured citizens of the airport’s robust security measures and encouraged the public to report any suspicious activities to the authorities. She highlighted the importance of community vigilance in maintaining public safety.

In the past ten days, Delhi Police have registered eight FIRs related to bomb threats, impacting over 100 domestic and international flights. In response to the recent surge in hoax threats against various airlines, the Ministry of Information and Technology has directed social media platforms to adhere to IT regulations by quickly removing or blocking access to misleading information.”
